Australia's energy transition to 100% renewables
01 May 2023

How much of Australia's electricity comes from renewable sources right now?

And by 'now', I mean this minute.

I have been asking my friends and colleagues this question, and their estimates tend to hover around the 20% mark.

The good news is that we are way above that number during the day, and even under cover of darkness, we still manage a respectable contribution from renewable sources.

Thanks to the OpenNEM project, we already have many detailed charts showing all aspects of the electricity market. But as we accelerate our transition to clean energy, I wanted to create something for the rest of us that conveys this information in a simple and accessible way. We all need to get excited about our progress and be able to see the end goal of a 100% clean electricity grid.

Yes, energy data can be beautiful. You can see it for yourself in this real-time data visualisation showing the electricity generation mix across Australia. The view updates automatically every five minutes, it was designed for a big screen, but it works on mobile too.
